New UK rules take effect Autumn 2026. 78% of subscription businesses are non-compliant. Find out where you stand in 2 minutes.
Check My ComplianceThe Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA) is a landmark piece of UK legislation that introduces sweeping changes to how subscription businesses operate. Passed into law in 2024, its subscription-specific provisions come into force in Autumn 2026.
The Act introduces strict new rules designed to protect consumers from subscription traps and dark patterns. Businesses that sell subscriptions — whether physical products, digital services, or SaaS — must comply with mandatory cooling-off periods, provide easy online cancellation, send pre-renewal reminder emails, and ensure transparent pricing throughout the customer journey.
Non-compliance carries serious consequences. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gains enhanced enforcement powers, including the ability to impose fines of up to 10% of global turnover and issue direct penalties without needing court proceedings.
Whether you run a WooCommerce store, a membership site, or any recurring-payment business serving UK customers, these rules apply to you. The time to prepare is now.
You must offer simple online cancellation. Phone-only or email-only cancellation processes are banned. Customers must be able to cancel as easily as they signed up.
You must send reminder emails before each renewal, clearly stating the renewal price and date. Customers must have adequate notice to decide whether to continue.
New subscribers get a mandatory 14-day cooling-off period with the right to a full refund. This applies to all new subscription sign-ups without exception.
Renewal terms and any price changes must be clearly communicated. Customers must be notified at least 30 days before any price increase takes effect.
